Cleaning system comparison
The main difference between hot- and cold-water bin cleaning trailers is the addition of a water-heating system. Heat can help loosen greasy residue, while cold-water equipment offers a cleaning setup without a burner to fuel and maintain.
The better fit depends on the soil you expect to remove, the complete equipment configuration and your operating budget. Customer type alone does not determine the answer: a residential route may benefit from hot water, and not every commercial job requires it.
How Cold-Water Bin Cleaning Works
A cold-water system uses its pump, nozzles and cleaning head to direct pressurized water at the bin surface. It uses the available supply-water temperature rather than adding heat through a burner.
Assess the results on representative bins. Pressure, flow, spray coverage, technique and the condition of the bin all affect cleaning. The absence of a heating system removes burner-related fuel use and servicing, but the engine, pump, lift and trailer still require maintenance.
What Hot Water Adds to the Process
A heated system adds thermal energy to the wash. This can help with oily or greasy deposits that are harder to remove with cold water alone. Whether it reduces your cleaning time depends on the residue, temperature, flow and operating method.
Evaluate the heating equipment as part of the full setup. Ask about fuel requirements, temperature controls, operating procedures and service access. Do not assume every system reaches or maintains the same temperature under working conditions.
Hot vs Cold Water: Practical Comparison
On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to compare all columns.
| Consideration | Cold-water setup | Heated setup |
|---|---|---|
| Water heating | No onboard burner in a cold-water-only configuration. | Adds heating equipment; confirm the installed system. |
| Greasy residue | Evaluate performance on the soil you expect to encounter. | Heat can help loosen grease; verify results in comparable conditions. |
| Operating costs | No burner fuel or burner servicing. | Budget for heating fuel and additional component maintenance. |
| Purchase comparison | Compare the entire configuration and included equipment. | Check what else changes besides heating, such as axle layout and platform. |
| Customer fit | Depends on the required cleaning outcome and workflow. | Depends on whether heating provides a useful benefit for the work. |
| Disinfection claims | Pressure washing alone is not a verified disinfection process. | A heater alone does not establish a verified disinfection process. |
Cleaning and Disinfection Are Different Claims
Removing visible soil and achieving a specified reduction in microorganisms are different outcomes. A burner temperature or short wash cycle, by itself, does not establish that the entire bin surface received a validated treatment.
Describe the service accurately. Do not promise a bacteria-kill percentage based only on the equipment having hot water. If you offer a separate sanitizing or disinfecting treatment, use a supported procedure and follow the product’s application and contact-time instructions.
The CDC explains the distinction between cleaning and disinfection and the importance of following disinfectant directions. This general guidance is not certification of any trailer. Confirm chemical compatibility and the application method with your equipment manufacturer before using a product.
Single Cold vs Standard Double Hot
The Bin Trailer’s standard Single Cold uses cold water on a single-axle platform. The standard Double Hot uses a tandem-axle platform and offers hot- and cold-water operation. Both use a manual Smart Lift.
The standard Double Hot cleans one bin at a time. Its name does not mean it washes two bins simultaneously. Because the platforms also differ, the comparison is broader than the price of adding a heater.
California editions have their own configurations. Confirm the exact engine, pump and heating equipment in your quote rather than assuming they match the standard model. Review the current model catalog for specifications and pricing.
How to Choose for Your Route
Compare Representative Cleaning Jobs
Consider the bins you expect to service most often. Ask for a demonstration or operating video showing comparable soil and the complete workflow, including moving bins and exterior rinsing. Avoid choosing solely from a short interior-wash clip.
Budget for the Complete Configuration
Compare towing requirements, storage, water capacity and service needs along with heating. A different trailer platform or additional maintenance obligation can matter as much as the purchase-price difference.
Verify the Value Before Upgrading
A heated trailer does not automatically produce more customers or justify higher service prices. Decide whether the added capability solves a specific operating need. If you plan to add heat later, confirm whether an approved retrofit is available; do not assume a cold-water trailer can accept a heater without other changes.
